Colour shifts in ageing negatives

Colour negative stocks age differently, and scanning can add its own problems. It is tempting to push every restoration towards contemporary white balance, but that can erase the image’s period feel.

When colour information is incomplete, is a neutral modern rendition preferable, or should we preserve some of the original cast?
