Scanning & Restoration
Restore or conserve? The case for keeping both versions
A restored photograph may be easier to see, but the original scan remains the historical object.
Our preference is non-destructive editing: keep the original file untouched, log transformations, and label a restoration as a derivative rather than silently replacing the source.
What level of restoration feels useful to you before the result stops looking like the photograph you came to study?
