The value of scratches, borders and damaged colour

Should the archive crop out the frame border? Should a faded colour cast be corrected? Should tiny scratches be cleaned away?

For many objects the answer depends on whether we are making a restoration for viewing or preserving documentary evidence of a physical print.

I would like both versions where possible: original scan and optional restoration, clearly labelled.
