How should uncertain provenance appear in an archive?

“Probably from a European magazine” is not a citation. And an online repost is not proof of origin.

An honest photographic catalogue should make uncertainty visible rather than tidy it away. Our working labels are: documented, partly documented, unknown and disputed.

Would you find a short source note on each collection useful, or would you rather keep the metadata behind a details button?
